Family Nurse Practitioner

Family nurse practitioners are advanced level individuals who work under supervised practitioners in the primary sector. They are also skilled to give special health care services without a physician. They serve patients’ being their family doctors and perform many renowned services like taking different exams, identifying illnesses, recommend medications and more.

These specialists work with a diverse group of patients, providing education and counseling besides regular nursing care.

FNPs job focuses on disease prevention and health promotion throughout their patients’ lives from childhood through adolescence and into adulthood. Their work settings are broad-ranging, from clinics, health centers and private offices, to hospice centers, private homes and schools.

• Becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner

Because this is an advanced field of nursing, the educational requirements for becoming a certified family nurse practitioner are also quite stringent. These practitioners need a specialization in family nursing.

After getting a nursing degree and license to start practicing work, the nurse has to complete an advanced degree in nursing such as a Maters or doctorate. Courses to take during these programs are those focused on family nursing and intervention, such as chronic illness supervision, primary healthcare apprehension, research, and leadership training.

Following this, the nurse can take a board certification exam administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, which is a well-known subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA). Clearing this exam entitles one to become a Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (CFNP).
